Indian Herbs: Natural Cure for Diabetes

April 28th, 2009

Herbal And Natural Remedies For Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin.

The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

It is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and other signs, as distinct from a single illness or condition. Diabetes can cause many complications.

Using herbal remedies and plant derivatives to help in the treatment of diabetes should certainly not be discounted. Although numerous ‘miracle herbal cure’ companies exist, and champion the ability of herbal compounds to supplement insulin as a treatment; these should not be taken at face value without thorough research and consultation with experts.

herbs for diabetes

That is not to say that some of the following herbs do not have properties that some diabetics will find beneficial. The herbs and plant derivatives listed below have largely been employed traditionally by native people in the treatment of diabetes, in the areas in which they grow

  • Indian gooseberry, a rich source of vitamin C serves as the best home remedy for diabetes. Take 1 tbsp of gooseberry juice and mix it with a cup of bitter gourd juice. Consume the mixture daily for about 2 months.

  • Yemeni med: Soak 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds (Hilba) in 1 cup of water at night. Drink the water in the morning on an empty stomach and eat the seeds. Very good for diabetes because it works like insulin.

  • Bitter Gourd – Make a watery juice of a small Bitter Gourd (remove seeds) and drink every morning. Bitter Gourd also helps to clear pimples and maintain a good skin, and is good for de-worming the intestines.

  • The Fenugreek Plant has been used as a treatment for diabetes for hundreds of years. Fenugreek is a proven hypoglycemic in numerous studies performed on animals, though not enough studies have been done on humans to definitively prove the hypoglycemic effect. Fenugreek contains three compounds: rigonelline, 4-hydroxyisoleucine, and fenugreekine. The trigonelline works by slowing glucose absorption from the intestinal tract and so preventing spikes in patient blood levels after meals. The 4-hydroxyisoleucine, on the other hand, directly appears to stimulate the production of insulin by the pancreas. Eat ten fully-grown curry leaves every morning. Eating these leaves for three months should help protect you against an onset of diabetes through genetics. It is also helpful for helping alleviate symptoms in severely obese patients.

  • Cinnamon : Cinnamon is a spice derived from the bark of an evergreen tree, which is native to India. Its active ingredient has been proven to act like insulin and lower blood glucose levels. In medical studies, cinnamon has also been proven to lower bad cholesterol levels. Another great benefit of cinnamon is that it helps neutralize free radicals, dangerous chemicals which are elevated in diabetics. Neutralizing these free radical will help reduce or eliminate risk of serious complications.

diabetic foods

Drink water at least 8 to 10 glasses per day.

Eat raw vegetables in large quantity. Cooked food raises the level of blood sugar fast. This apart, cooking destroys vitamins, enzymes and minerals in the vegetables and fruits.

Some fruits are also valuable in controlling sugar level. Take grapes, Indian blackberry, fig, kiwi fruits and citrus fruits and pomegranate juice. Let these things be your morning breakfast.

As for vegetables, onion, garlic, radish, cucumber, carrot, tomato, cabbage and cucumber are excellent in the treatment of diabetes.

Moong sprouted and unripe banana cooked, are also recommended.

Take those fruits and vegetables in which fiber content is very high. Such type of food lowers the need for insulin, the reason being it releases energy into the body cells slowly.

High fiber diet means more chromium which is very helpful in the treatment of diabetes. Some herbs and vegetables are specifically prescribed for diabetes, like bitter melon juice.

Two Brazilian Herbs for Diabetes are a Natural Cure for Diabetes

April 9th, 2009

Herbs for Diabetes

Diabetes is on the rise in every western country and now in the eastern world as well.  Trying to give up sugar is like trying to give up cocaine except in the case of sugar even your grandmother is a pusher.

Detoxing is only do able if you are determined to go raw, juice to cleanse your entire body, liver, colon and bowel with a total 12 step detox.

People are turning more and more to natural whole foods and juices and alternate medicines to balance out ailments such as diabetes.

The article below discusses two herbs known for their natural diabetic benefits.

Diabetic Herbs by Patricia McDougall

Yacon and Pata de vaca are two natural diabetes herbs from Peru. They are found in a new natural diabetes herbal supplement from Amazon Botanicals.

Yacon is a unique plant in that it is sweet but is low in calories and contains oligofructose a sugar that is not absorbed into the body because the carbohydrates in Yacon are in the form of insulin not starch.

Pata de vaca, meaning literally "the cow’s hoof" is a small plant that grows to a height of 5-9 meters and has leaves that are shaped like a cow’s hoofs.

Pata de vaca is an important medicinal herb in Brazil. The plant has been used for over sixty years as a natural diabetes herb in controlling blood sugar. Its effects are supposed to be so good that it has earned the sobriquet "vegetable insulin".

In Peru and Brazil it has been clinically studied and is used extensively as a natural diabetes herb.

"Sugar Control" combines the goodness of these two natural diabetes herbs to provide you with a reliable, safe and natural treatment for diabetes.

Amazon Botanicals use only organically grown or ethically harvested herbs thus assuring 100% purity without fillers. Other companies may use stale herbs bought from middlemen that buy from questionable sources with little concern for the Amazon environment.

yaca diabetic herb
The herbs are available from Amazon Botanicals in two forms – tincture and tea.

The tincture is made by extracting Yacon and Pata de vaca in distilled water and 45% alcohol. The recommended dosage is 60 drops (2 ml) twice a day, taken under the tongue or added to water or juice.

The tea is prepared from 100% pure Yacon and Pata de vaca leaves and is available in the form of tea bags. The tea bags are to be infused in hot water for ten minutes and taken once a day.

Those under medication for diabetes should take medical advice before starting on these natural diabetes herbs, as they have an effect of lowering blood sugar levels and hence may require adjustments in the existing medication and their dosages, as well as monitoring of blood sugar levels.

Bitter Melon Diabetes Remedy Link to Weigh Loss!

April 3rd, 2009

Bitter Melon for Diabetes and Fat Metabolism

Diabetes is becoming a common western, and more lately eastern, condition that is easily managed and even cured

Natural remedies such as herbs, homeopathy, diet, teas, juices and cleanses if used regularly are used as part of diabetes treatments to reduce blood sugar levels, detox your body and cleanse tired organs to help reduce the symptoms of diabetes.

There are many ways you can control your diabetes.

One of the easiest ways is by using food to your advantage t detox with juices and diet.

Bitter melon is cultivated in both India and China and in Asian immigrant communities around the world for food and medicinal uses.

The medicinal properties of the plant are recorded in the Ben Cao Gang Mu, an ancient Chinese medical text. Traditional Asian medicine uses the juice of this bumpy gourd to treat colic, diabetes, and gout.

Contemporary scientific testing with laboratory animals finds that a diet that is 1.5 percent bitter melon (the equivalent of a serving a day) reduces:

  • weight gain on high-fat diets by about 25 percent,

  • reduces leptin levels by about 50 percent, and

  • drastically reduces insulin levels.

The juice is also well documented for its ability to lower blood sugar levels, but since it lowers insulin levels rather than raising them, scientists believe that its effects are due to its changes in fat metabolism.

Bitter melon does not imitate insulin. Neither does it reduce the amount of fat absorbed into the bloodstream. It increases it.

But at least in laboratory experiments with animals, the juice cancels out the effects of high fatty acid levels in the bloodstream so that they do not cause insulin resistance.

It causes fat cells to use energy inefficiently so less fat is stored.

Even though the melon juice lowers insulin levels and raises free fatty acid levels, the results of using juice on a regular basis are lower blood sugars, lower triglycerides, and lower weight.

Bitter melon is available in most Asian markets. When you buy the fresh product, look for one that is pale green or yellow (orange ones are too old).

Slice the unpeeled fruit lengthwise, remove the seeds, cut it into thin slices, and steam or boil them until the fruit is tender enough to cut with the edge of a spoon.

10 Best Home Remedies For Diabetes

This article is dedicated to the best Home Remedies for Diabetes.

First of all let me tell you what is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism the way our bodies use digested food for development and energy. It is widely accepted as one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States.

It is connected with long-term complications that affect almost every part of the body. It is a chronic and progressive ailment that has an impact upon almost every part of life.

Diabetes grows when the body can’t use glucose properly

Insulin is a hormone that is essential to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy.

Insulin permits glucose to move from the blood into liver, muscle, and fat cells, where it is used for fuel.

In diabetes, the immune system molests and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

When type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, the pancreas is frequently producing enough insulin, but for unidentified reasons the body cannot use the insulin effectively, a condition called insulin resistance.

Type of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes

The body stops producing insulin or produces too little insulin to regulate blood glucose level. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s own immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas (called beta cells).

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune illness. Type 1 diabetes grows most often in children but can occur at any age.

Type 1 diabetes comprises about 10% of total cases of diabetes in the United States. Type 1 diabetes is typically recognized in childhood or adolescence and can occur in an older individual due to destruction of pancreas by alcohol, disease, or removal by surgery or progressive failure of pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is gradually more being diagnosed in children and adolescents. Type 2 diabetes is more ordinary in older people, particularly in people who are overweight, and happens more often in:

  • African Americans,

  • American Indians,

  • some Asian Americans,

  • Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islander Americans, and

  • Hispanics/Latinos.

The pancreas secretes insulin, but the body is partially or completely not capable to use the insulin. Type 2 diabetes is classically recognized in adulthood, generally after age 45 years. Type 2 diabetes is usually controlled with diet, weight loss, exercise, and oral medications

Trfruit diabeteseating Diabetes by Juicing

Treating Diabetes by juicing can be as simple as extracting the fresh juice from raw fruit and vegetables.

People with diabetes mellitus cannot properly process glucose, a sugar the body uses for energy. As a result, glucose stays in the blood, causing blood glucose levels to rise.

Juices used to Treat Diabetes

Daily Juicing of vegetables and fruits can be used in any combination of the following:

  • ginger,

  • garlic,

  • celery,

  • pumpkin,

  • cabbage,

  • asparagus,

  • parsley,

  • spinach,

  • leeks,

  • spinach,

  • beets and

  • carrots.

Juicing fresh green vegetables such as brussel sprouts and string beans is a wonderful health benefit as both are good sources of natural insulin.

Nutrients such as silicon works to support the pancreas and are found in

  • alfalfa,

  • olives,

  • asparagus,

  • lettuce,

  • mustard greens,

  • radishes,

  • cabbage and

  • cucumbers.

Use fruit combinations sparingly due to their high sugar content. Sweet juices such as carrot, beet, grape, apple or pear juice should be half diluted with water or mixed with other juices such as celery.

Make only as much juice as needed for immediate use. In storage including refrigeration, raw juices oxidize rapidly and lose their medicinal value in as little as 10 minutes.

Bitter Melon

juice has been used to treat diabetes mellitus (according to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians). The plant contains at least three known compounds that can lower the body’s blood sugar level. Recommended serving per day is 2 ounces of fresh bitter melon juice.

Mangosteen juice

used as a supplement under medical supervision may decrease blood sugar levels and benefit those with type 2 diabetes. Recommended dose per day is 1 ounce or 30ml of Mangosteen juice to be taken before a meal.

Drug Interactions

Grapefruit juice interacts badly with certain prescription drugs. Please check with your physician.

Diabetics who are taking the following medication should not use bitter melon juice:

  • chlorpropamine,

  • glyburide,

  • phenformin, or

  • insulin.

This can increase the effects of these drugs and lead to severe hypoglycemia. Diabetics should consult their medical professional before taking this juice.

Medical Precautions

If you have complications in pregnancy such as gestational diabetes or blood pressure problems please check the use of mangosteen juice with your physician.

Always take fruit juices with food. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting fruit juice for children under 6 years of age to four to six ounces a day.

Bitter melon is an abortifacient, so women who are pregnant or nursing should not take it. Do not give this melon to small children and infants due to its hypoglycemic effects. Bitter melon is also an emmenagogue, which means that it encourages or increases menstrual flow in women.

Avoid

  • Due to high sugar content, diabetes may be aggravated by excessive intake of sweet juices such as carrots and most fruits.

  • Excessive intake of tomato and citrus juices could upset the body’s natural acid (pH) balance as they are highly acidic.

Side Effects

  • According to the American Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine: If too much bitter melon juice is taken; it can cause mild abdominal pain or diarrhea.

  • Multiple servings of Mangosteen juice tend to raise blood sugar initially even with as little as 15ml. This has been observed more often in people of Asian descent who are not obese.

Preliminary Trials

  • Two preliminary trials found that aloe vera juice (containing 80% aloe gel) helps lower blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes.

  • August 29, 2006 — Drinking pomegranate juice may help people with diabetes reduce their risk of heart disease. In the small study, published in the journal Atherosclerosis, researchers examined the effects: of drinking a concentrated form of pomegranate juice. Michael Aviram, researcher of the Techion Faculty of Medicine in Haifa, Israel, says:"Patients with type 2 diabetes (who were not dependent on insulin therapy) were tested. Blood sugar levels were not affected which suggests that the antioxidants found in pomegranate juice may be especially beneficial in reducing heart-related risks associated with diabetes."

  • The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians in Seattle has a referral database of naturopathic physicians: who practice juice treatments throughout the United States.

  • Daily juicing of primarily organic vegetables and fruits is a beneficial part of any long term program to treat diabetes. Juicing provides a highly effective and efficient way for the body to be able to absorb essential nutrients into the blood and cells. Drinking juice is one of the best and quickest ways for the body to utilize these nutrients within minutes instead of hours.
