Indian Herbs: Natural Cure for Diabetes

April 28th, 2009

Herbal And Natural Remedies For Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin.

The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

It is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and other signs, as distinct from a single illness or condition. Diabetes can cause many complications.

Using herbal remedies and plant derivatives to help in the treatment of diabetes should certainly not be discounted. Although numerous ‘miracle herbal cure’ companies exist, and champion the ability of herbal compounds to supplement insulin as a treatment; these should not be taken at face value without thorough research and consultation with experts.

herbs for diabetes

That is not to say that some of the following herbs do not have properties that some diabetics will find beneficial. The herbs and plant derivatives listed below have largely been employed traditionally by native people in the treatment of diabetes, in the areas in which they grow

  • Indian gooseberry, a rich source of vitamin C serves as the best home remedy for diabetes. Take 1 tbsp of gooseberry juice and mix it with a cup of bitter gourd juice. Consume the mixture daily for about 2 months.
  • Yemeni med: Soak 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds (Hilba) in 1 cup of water at night. Drink the water in the morning on an empty stomach and eat the seeds. Very good for diabetes because it works like insulin.
  • Bitter Gourd – Make a watery juice of a small Bitter Gourd (remove seeds) and drink every morning. Bitter Gourd also helps to clear pimples and maintain a good skin, and is good for de-worming the intestines.

  • The Fenugreek Plant has been used as a treatment for diabetes for hundreds of years. Fenugreek is a proven hypoglycemic in numerous studies performed on animals, though not enough studies have been done on humans to definitively prove the hypoglycemic effect. Fenugreek contains three compounds: rigonelline, 4-hydroxyisoleucine, and fenugreekine. The trigonelline works by slowing glucose absorption from the intestinal tract and so preventing spikes in patient blood levels after meals. The 4-hydroxyisoleucine, on the other hand, directly appears to stimulate the production of insulin by the pancreas. Eat ten fully-grown curry leaves every morning. Eating these leaves for three months should help protect you against an onset of diabetes through genetics. It is also helpful for helping alleviate symptoms in severely obese patients.
  • Cinnamon : Cinnamon is a spice derived from the bark of an evergreen tree, which is native to India. Its active ingredient has been proven to act like insulin and lower blood glucose levels. In medical studies, cinnamon has also been proven to lower bad cholesterol levels. Another great benefit of cinnamon is that it helps neutralize free radicals, dangerous chemicals which are elevated in diabetics. Neutralizing these free radical will help reduce or eliminate risk of serious complications.

Bitter Melon for Diabetes and Fat Metabolism

Diabetes is becoming a common western, and more lately eastern, condition that is easily managed and even cured.

Natural remedies such as herbs, homeopathy, diet, teas, juices and cleanses if used regularly are used as part of diabetes treatments to reduce blood sugar levels, detox your body and cleanse tired organs to help reduce the symptoms of diabetes.

There are many ways you can control your diabetes.

One of the easiest ways is by using food to your advantage t detox with juices and diet.

Bitter melon is cultivated in both India and China and in Asian immigrant communities around the world for food and medicinal uses.

The medicinal properties of the plant are recorded in the Ben Cao Gang Mu, an ancient Chinese medical text. Traditional Asian medicine uses the juice of this bumpy gourd to treat colic, diabetes, and gout.

Contemporary scientific testing with laboratory animals finds that a diet that is 1.5 percent bitter melon (the equivalent of a serving a day) reduces:

  • weight gain on high-fat diets by about 25 percent,
  • reduces leptin levels by about 50 percent, and
  • drastically reduces insulin levels.

The juice is also well documented for its ability to lower blood sugar levels, but since it lowers insulin levels rather than raising them, scientists believe that its effects are due to its changes in fat metabolism.

Bitter melon does not imitate insulin. Neither does it reduce the amount of fat absorbed into the bloodstream. It increases it.

But at least in laboratory experiments with animals, the juice cancels out the effects of high fatty acid levels in the bloodstream so that they do not cause insulin resistance.

It causes fat cells to use energy inefficiently so less fat is stored.

Even though the melon juice lowers insulin levels and raises free fatty acid levels, the results of using juice on a regular basis are lower blood sugars, lower triglycerides, and lower weight.

Bitter melon is available in most Asian markets. When you buy the fresh product, look for one that is pale green or yellow (orange ones are too old).

Slice the unpeeled fruit lengthwise, remove the seeds, cut it into thin slices, and steam or boil them until the fruit is tender enough to cut with the edge of a spoon.

Diabetes grows when the body can’t use glucose properly

Insulin is a hormone that is essential to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy.

Insulin permits glucose to move from the blood into liver, muscle, and fat cells, where it is used for fuel.

In diabetes, the immune system molests and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

When type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, the pancreas is frequently producing enough insulin, but for unidentified reasons the body cannot use the insulin effectively, a condition called insulin resistance.

Type of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes

The body stops producing insulin or produces too little insulin to regulate blood glucose level. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s own immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas (called beta cells).

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune illness. Type 1 diabetes grows most often in children but can occur at any age.

Type 1 diabetes comprises about 10% of total cases of diabetes in the United States. Type 1 diabetes is typically recognized in childhood or adolescence and can occur in an older individual due to destruction of pancreas by alcohol, disease, or removal by surgery or progressive failure of pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is gradually more being diagnosed in children and adolescents. Type 2 diabetes is more ordinary in older people, particularly in people who are overweight, and happens more often in:

  • African Americans,
  • American Indians,
  • some Asian Americans,
  • Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islander Americans, and
  • Hispanics/Latinos.

The pancreas secretes insulin, but the body is partially or completely not capable to use the insulin. Type 2 diabetes is classically recognized in adulthood, generally after age 45 years. Type 2 diabetes is usually controlled with diet, weight loss, exercise, and oral medications
